The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced Monday that it would reissue those slick, black, retro plates, originally issued from 1963 through 1969 during the heyday of the muscle car. The throwback plates, which cost $45, will be issued in the next two to three weeks as part of the state’s Legacy License Plate Program, created in 2012 by state Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Glendale. The idea behind the program was to help out car enthusiasts, who would have to put an unsightly, bright-white, out-of-period plate on their restored ride. “This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design,” he said.
